The Walking Dead has been renewed for season 9 (airing most likely in late 2018), no real surprise there, but the big surprise is that current showrunner Scott Gimple has been promoted to Chief Content Officer, where he’ll be overseeing the entire Dead television universe–including The Walking Dead, Fear the Walking Dead and potential brand extensions on a variety of platforms.

As Gimple moves out as showrunner, that brings in Angela Kang, who has been a writer on The Walking Dead since 2011 and co-executive producer since 2013, as the new executive producer and showrunner of The Walking Dead, starting in season 9.
