TWD season 8 midseason finale quick recap and a look ahead

SPOILERS ahead! Below I’ve put together the more important events that happened in The Walking Dead season 8 episode 8 “How It’s Gotta Be” but you can read the full episode recap and watch the “Inside the Episode” video here.

In episode 808, in a flashback, Carl and Rick talk, Carl questions Rick about killing the Saviors and suggests trying something else; Carl is shown writing a letter for Rick; Aaron and Enid go to the Oceanside to ask for their help but during the night Enid sees Aaron struggling with someone, Enid shoots the person and it turns out to be Natania, Oceanside’s leader; Negan and the Saviors arrive at Alexandria’s front gate and Carl keeps them busy as the others prepare to exit out the back; the Alexandrians (including Michonne, Daryl, Tara and Rosita) crash out the back gate, while Dwight, Laura, and some Saviors chase after them; Negan and Saviors fire grenades into Alexandria, blowing up houses; Simon and Saviors surround Maggie’s convoy of Hilltop fighters, Simon tells Maggie that the Saviors are destroying Alexandria and the Kingdom, and they will leave Hilltop alone so they can produce food; Dwight lets his group of Saviors go right into a trap that the Alexandrians (Daryl and the others) set up; Dwight kills a few Saviors and Laura figures out that Dwight is the traitor, she shoots him in the shoulder and escapes; Gavin and Saviors go to the Kingdom and tell everyone that they’re taking over now, they call out for Ezekiel to surrender himself; Ezekiel sets off an explosion to distract the Saviors while the community members get to safety; Ezekiel locks the gate and surrenders to Gavin; Morgan is shown outside the gate just listening; and Rick and Negan have a good short 1-on-1 fight with it ending as Rick gets thrown out the front window and he hobbles off.

And the biggest WTF moment of season 8 happens at the end of episode 808. Rick and Michonne go into the sewers to join the rest of the Alexandrians, who are all looking sad. They reach Carl, as he’s not looking so good, and he shows them that he’s been bitten… WTF, and the episode ends.

LOOKING AHEAD
What’s going to happen next? With the ending in episode 808, the show seems to be going a somewhat different way from the comic book. Does this mean that Rick is expendable?
