SPOILERS ahead! Below I’ve put together the more important events that happened in The Walking Dead season 8 episode 1 “Mercy” but you can read the full episode recap and watch the “Inside the Episode” video here.

In episode 801, we see a number of scenes out of chronological order: Rick as an old man, Rick leading the three communities as they prepare and attack the Saviors Sanctuary before they can, Carl runs into a stranger but he’s scared away by Rick, Gregory being his usual a-hole self, Gabriel gets stuck behind because of Gregory and finds himself in a room with Negan.
