Episode summary (source)

Sasha lays awake in her room, staring at framed photos of the house’s previous residents. She checks out her gun from the armory and heads into the woods, where she uses the photos for target practice. “Come and get me,” she says, on alert for walkers.

Rick, Carol and Daryl meet elsewhere in the woods to devise a strategy for stealing guns from the armory, just in case they’re needed at some point. Carol offers to leave a window latch open at the armory so they can sneak in. She kills an approaching walker. Daryl notices a “W” carved into its forehead.

Later, back at the house, Michonne dons her constable uniform. She and Rick try to guess Deanna’s motive for handing authority over to strangers.

Meanwhile, Daryl hunts in the woods and runs into Aaron, who asks to join him. Daryl tells Aaron to keep up.

At her house, Deanna outlines Rick and Michonne’s duties: patrol the walls and resolve community conflicts. She envisions a government in which Maggie will play a role, as well as a community with “industry, commerce, civilization.”

Rick, Michonne, Maggie and Deanna walk along the wall. Rick insists they need constant patrols to stop intruders from scaling it. Sasha joins them and offers to be a lookout in the clock tower, taking as many shifts as possible. Rick is shocked to learn that there are no lookouts and tells Deanna to install one immediately. Deanna decides to give the first shift to her son, Spencer, but says she’ll consider making Sasha their primary lookout. In exchange, Sasha has to join the group that evening at a welcome party hosted by Deanna.

Later, Carol tells Rick she can sneak into the armory while everyone is at Deanna’s party. Rick offers to back her up but Carol says people would notice his absence.

Daryl and Aaron come to a clearing, where they encounter a horse that Aaron has been trying to catch. The horse gets spooked by walkers and gallops away.

Olivia lets Carol into the supply room/armory to give Carol some chocolate for a cookie recipe. Carol discreetly opens a window latch. One of the townspeople, Tobin, introduces himself to Carol and offers to teach her to shoot. Still feigning meekness, Carol happily accepts.

Tracking the horse, Aaron empathizes with Daryl’s feeling of isolation in the community, saying he and Eric are sometimes treated like outsiders because of their homosexuality. He adds that people eventually warm up, urging Daryl to attend Deanna’s party and “let them get to know you.” The two eventually catch up with the horse in time to see it mauled by a herd of walkers. Aaron shoots the horse to end its suffering.

At the party, Deanna introduces Rick to her husband, Reg, an architect who built the walls around Alexandria. Reg praises Rick for having kept his group alive for so long.

Later that night, Daryl walks up to Deanna’s party but changes his mind at the last minute. As he heads home, Aaron spots him from his porch and invites him inside to dinner.

Meanwhile, Carol leaves the party to break into the armory.

Jessie introduces Rick to her husband, Pete, who is a doctor. Pete goes to refill his drink, leaving Rick and Jessie alone. “Ordinary life, like before,” she says of the party. “No,” Rick disagrees, although he smiles when he sees Carl laughing with Ron and Mikey.

Sam, Jessie’s younger son, complains to Jessie that the cookies are gone. Rick offers to have Carol make him a special batch. Sam stamps an “A” on Rick’s hand, making Rick an honorary member of their family.

Sasha arrives at the party and is greeted by Spencer. He offers to show her around but she abruptly excuses herself.

Meanwhile, Aaron, Eric and Daryl eat a spaghetti dinner. Eric mentions Daryl’s job but stops short when he realizes Aaron didn’t mention the job to Daryl yet.

Aaron takes Daryl to the garage, which is filled with motorcycle parts. He says Daryl is going to need a bike for his job as Aaron’s recruiting partner. Aaron picked Daryl, he says, because Daryl knows the difference between a good person and a bad person. Daryl accepts.

Abraham, drunk, joins Michonne on Deanna’s patio and waxes philosophical about her katana. “Pray to god you don’t have to use it again, pray to god you don’t get used to not using it again,” he says.

Carol sneaks into the armory and stuffs guns into a bag. Sam follows her inside to ask for more cookies. Carol threatens Sam that if he ever tells anyone what he saw, she’ll kidnap him and feed him to walkers. “Or,” she tells a petrified Sam, “you can promise not to ever tell anyone what you saw. And then nothing will happen. And you’ll get cookies.”

Back at the party, Jessie coos over Judith. As she hands the baby to Rick, he gives Jessie a quick kiss. Unsure, Jessie smiles and leaves the room.

As Sasha takes in the idle party chatter, she has flashbacks to Beth’s dead body and Tyreese’s burial. A woman tells Sasha that she’s cooking meals for the newcomers and is worried she’ll cook something that Sasha hates. “That’s what you worry about?” Sasha yells. She storms off.

The next day, Deanna joins Sasha at the entry gate. “This, it isn’t real,” Sasha says about the community. “That’s bullshit,” Deanna tells her. Sasha walks out.

In the woods, Carol gives Daryl his pick of the stolen guns. He wonders if they really need guns after all and decides not to take one. Rick selects a handgun and stashes it in his belt.

Back at the house, Michonne hangs her katana up over the fireplace.

Patrolling the streets, Rick sees Jesse strolling with Pete. She holds up her hand, displaying her “A” stamp. He responds by flashing his own. Staring at Pete, Rick instinctively reaches for his pistol.

Rick continues his patrol and hears a walker outside the wall. He puts his hand on the wall and stares at the “A” on his hand. As the walker outside grows more agitated, Rick grows more serene.
