Episode summary (source)

While the survivors are stopped on the road to Washington, D.C., Maggie sobs alone in the woods. A walker approaches, getting tangled in the branches right behind her. Maggie gets up to stab it, then sits down and resumes crying.

Daryl finds a worm buried in the dirt and eats it. Sasha unsuccessfully searches the ground for signs of water. She shakes her head as Maggie and Daryl join her.

Daryl, Maggie and Sasha return to the road empty-handed. The rest of the group sits around a van, exhausted from dehydration and hunger. “They didn’t find any, either,” Maggie says.

After getting back on the road, the survivor’s van runs out of gas, and they’re forced to continue on foot. Daryl notes that Judith is hungry and decides to go foraging in the woods. Carol offers to join him.

Carl gives Maggie a jewelry box that he found while scavenging. Gabriel walks with Maggie and offers to discuss her grief over Beth and her father. “You never even met them,” she snaps, reminding Gabriel that he let his congregants die.

Sasha eyes a walker herd trailing the group at a distance. She suggests to Michonne that they take the dead down, but Michonne says they shouldn’t waste their energy. Sasha angrily marches off.

Meanwhile, in the woods, Carol gives Daryl a knife that once belonged to Beth, and urges him to let himself grieve.

Back on the road, Rick and the others lure the walker herd over the edge of a steep embankment. Sasha impatiently stabs a walker through the head, sparking a full-fledged assault. The group kills all the walkers and Michonne chastises Sasha for jeopardizing the group’s safety to satisfy her anger.

Down the road, the group comes across a cluster of abandoned cars. Daryl heads back into the woods as the group investigates.

Maggie opens a car trunk and finds a female walker bound and gagged inside. She instinctively shuts the trunk, then finds it won’t reopen when she resolves to put the walker down. Glenn sees Maggie growing frustrated and steps in. He opens the trunk and stabs the walker. “Let’s go,” he says.

As the group settles by the roadside for the night, a pack of feral dogs emerges from the forest. Sasha shoots them dead.

Later, the group mindlessly chews on the dog meat around a campfire. Noah tells Sasha that Tyreese tried to help him, but that he’s not sure he can survive. “Then you won’t,” Sasha says. As the group continues eating, Gabriel removes his clerical collar and throws it in the fire.

The next day, Maggie tells Glenn that in the wake of Beth’s death, she’s not sure she wants to keep going. “We fought to be here,” Glenn tells her. “We have to keep fighting.”

Abraham offers Sasha a sip from a liquor bottle that he found in a car. “You’re with friends,” he says. “We’re not friends,” she fires back.

Daryl heads into the woods again. He spots a barn in the distance and stakes it out. He lights a cigarette, then stubs it out on his hand. Finally, he breaks down in tears.

The group comes across a collection of water bottles in the middle of the road. “From a friend,” reads a note. As they debate the possibility that the water is a trap, Eugene grabs a bottle and starts to drink, but Abraham immediately slaps it out of his hand. Then thunder suddenly sounds and rain pours from the sky. Everyone laughs as they drink in the water. The downpour worsens, and Daryl tells Rick about the nearby barn.

The group secures the barn and settles in for the night. Rick, Daryl, Glenn and Carol sit around a fire. Rick recalls that his grandfather survived World War II by assuming every day that he was already dead. “This is how we survive,” Rick says. “We tell ourselves that we are the walking dead.”

“We ain’t them,” Daryl tells Rick.

Later that night, Daryl keeps watch while the group sleeps. As he secures the barn doors, he spots a herd of walkers approaching outside. He barricades the door with his body as the walkers pile up. The others rush to shore up the door with their collective weight as the tornado and walkers rage outside.

The next morning, Maggie wakes in Glenn’s arms. The storm has passed and the sun is shining. She relieves Daryl and wakes Sasha.

Maggie and Sasha walk outside and find mangled walkers and fallen trees. “It should’ve torn us apart,” Sasha says, marveling that the tornado spared the barn.

They watch the sun rise over a field. Then a man suddenly approaches with his hands raised. He introduces himself as Aaron and asks to speak to the person in charge. “I have good news,” he says.
